Families, teachers and folks of any age will enjoy a free event tonight that shows how mathematics and science operate using everyday objects in fun, new ways.
The goal of organizer Greg Zaller is to show that science is fun and easy — because you learn it by doing it.
“All it takes is a bathroom scale, a balloon and two salad dressing bottles to weigh the atmosphere,” Zaller writes as an example.
“I am hoping at this event to begin a group that not only helps with preparing for the new California common core standards for mathematics, but in changing the way we teach our young to become educated citizens,” said Zaller.
Participants will learn how to make a hot air balloon with a hair dryer and build an air bladder vehicle using a garbage bag. Bring some garbage bags, scissors and tape to share or just bring yourself.
Zaller, a credentialed teacher with degrees in biology and agriculture and a master's degree in science education, will lead two classes. You can attend one or both.
The first is set for 6:30 p.m. today, and the second at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, both at the Madelyn Helling Library, next to the Rood Administrative Center off Highway 49 in Nevada City.
Visit www.Coactive Learning.org for more information or to register; drop-ins are welcome. Classes are sponsored by the nonprofit Creative Learning Adventures.
