Proudly exclaiming “Daddy,” and clapping her hands, 7-year-old Skyler Stranahan cheered her father, Smartville's Jarrod Stranahan, as he was honored Wednesday as a Red Cross Real Hero.
He was one of 12 Real Heroes honored at luncheon by the Western Nevada branch of the American Red Cross at the Grass Valley Elks Club.
Jarrod Stranahan enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, and spent time as a forward observer in the Oruzgan Province of Afghanistan in 2004. He returned home in 2005.
More than 100 gathered for the event, which honored Samaritans and heroes from a wide variety of fields and good deeds.
James Frackell, 11, was honored for saving the life of his younger brother, Austin, in a near-drowning accident in 2010.
“I felt really good after I saved my little brother's life,” Frackell, a Boy Scout, said in a video detailing the rescue. “He was actually nice to me for a few days after that.”
Honorees included Stranahan; Frackell; Grass Valley Firefighter Mathew Schaake; Nevada Union High School Asst. Principal Cathy Peterson; Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Oncologist Dr. Bill Newsom; Nevada County Consolidated Fire Capt. James Turner; Grass Valley Police Department volunteer Ed Thomas; Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Director of Rehabilitation, Cardiopulmonary and Safety Officer Sue Urban; Karson, a yellow Labrador retriever and therapy dog; Red Cross Disaster Volunteer Beverly Parr; Caregivers Mary Boliver, Joan Denize and Richard Osterholt; and Hospitality House Executive Director Cindy Maple.
