Nevada Union's varsity soccer squad had a strong showing Wednesday with a 5-1 nonleague win over Forest Lake Christian.

Austin Cranston, Alec Hamlin, Adam Harris, Nick Harris and Riley Robinson each scored a goal for the Miners, while Ryan Cain added two assists in the victory.

NU is back in action Friday, traveling to Lindhurst for a nonleague match. Junior varsity opens action at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 6:45 p.m.

Volleyball: Placer 3, Forest Lake Christian 0

The Falcons fought hard, but fell short in a tight opening game with Placer Wednesday as the Hillmen went on to score a 25-22, 25-14, 25-14 nonleague victory over FLC.

Laura Ritchart had seven kills and 15 blocks, while Emily English added two kills and 14 blocks up front. Molly Huusfeldt served up eight aces and dished off 12 assists for the Falcons.

FLC (1-2) returns to action Friday, hosting Bradshaw Christian in a nonleague matchup.

Football (Frosh): Nevada Union 26, Ponderosa 13

The Nevada Union frosh football team evened its season record at 1-1 by bringing home a hard-fought victory over Ponderosa on Sept. 2.

NU overcame two lost fumbles and an errant shotgun snap to take the game. NU trailed at halftime 13-12, but entered the half with momentum after stopping Ponderosa four times from first and goal at the 3-yard line.

Ponderosa subsequently scored after a fumble following the stand, but with just more a minute left in the half NU marched 70 yards in four plays to score.

The defense, led by Sam Hayward with 11 tackles, Dylan McClure with 10, Tim Lopez with 6, and Jake Berger and T.J. Hart with 5 each and the leadership of Jason Murray, held the Bruins scoreless in the second half.

NU ran the ball 42 times for 270 yards, with Brandon Lopez gaining 108 on 19 carries, Jason Murray gaining 88 on 10 carries and Jake Berger gaining 76 on nine carries.

NU scored once in the third and once in the fourth quarter, but the defense decided the game with four outstanding stands in the second half.

NU travels to Lincoln of Stockton today.
