Nevada County resident Francisco Lovato will talk about “Survivor,” the book he wrote about his World War II-veteran father, in a presentation this week.

His free, multimedia presentation will include film, slides and live music. Copies of “Survivor” will be available for sale and signing, and light refreshments will be served.

The event is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9 in the Community Room at the Madelyn Helling Library, 980 Helling Way, Nevada City.

Lovato collaborated on the memoir with his father, Msgt. Frank N. Lovato, who died earlier this year at the age of 88.

The elder Lovato fought at Bataan and endured Japanese prisoner-of-war camps from Bataan to Nagasaki. His ordeal lasted three and a half years.

“To relive one man's first-hand story takes World War II from history to living history,” said the younger Lovato, who has lived in the area for 30 years and who retells his father's accounts in the book. “The time Dad and I spent together will remain one of the most precious times of my life.”

To commemorate the completion of their book, Francisco Lovato walked from Penn Valley to State Capitol Park in Sacramento, averaging 20 miles per day.
