A little sunshine broke through the recession clouds — Nevada County's sales were up in the first quarter.
Taxable sales increased 5.5 percent in the period from January to March 2010, compared to the same period in 2009, according to data released Friday.
Statewide, first quarter sales tax revenues were up 1.1 percent over the previous year. It's the first year-over-year gain in statewide sales in the past 2 1/2 years.
The jump came largely from rising gas prices, which had dipped in early 2009.
“Statewide, declines in local sales and use tax revenues are generally thought to have ‘bottomed out,'” according to analysts with The HdL Companies, which contracts with the county to compile sales tax data. “Expectations are for moderate gains ... in the next two quarters.”
The data is adjusted for reporting aberrations.
