Charles Frederick Ahrens died July 26 in Auburn, Calif. He was 92.
A service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary, 459 Hollow Way, Nevada City. A burial will take place at a later date at the Veterans Administra-tion cemetery in Dixon, Calif.
He was born on March, 3, 1918, in Jackson, Mich., to George and Ninona Ahrens. He married Helen on May, 15, 1942, in Lansing, Mich.
Mr. Ahrens served as a medic in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945, and was a grocer in Long Beach, Calif., for 25 years.
In 1974, they moved to Grass Valley and purchased the A&W Restaurant and later changed the name to Big A in 1982. Mr. Ahrens retired in 1995, and his son Jim took over the business. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and loved camping all over the United States.
Mr. Ahrens is survived by his wife, Helen Ahrens; daughters, LouAnne Erpelding of Citrus Heights, Calif., Sharie (Richard) Ellis of La Jolla, Calif., and Janice (Robert) Porter of Sacramento, Calif.; sons, James (Debbie) Ahrens of Grass Valley, and Richard (Melinda) Ahrens of Auburn, Calif.; grandchildren, Beth, Craig, Erika, Tanji, Jim Jr., Casey, Tyler and Corey; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Ashly, Colin, McKenzie, Kylie and Kira; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Ahrens was preceded in death by brother Howard Ahrens in 1992; and sister, Lily Binius in 2007.
