Donald Clifford Leaming died July 20 at home in Nevada City due to complications of Parkinson's Disease. He was 87.
Per his wishes, there will be no service.
Donald was born on Oct. 13, 1922, in Toronto, Canada, to William and Kathleen Leaming.
During World War II, Donald served in the Canadian Merchant Marine.
He was a radio operator and 3rd Officer on board oil tankers. Donald was proud to have served on one of the first allied vessels to enter Ancona, Italy, after the fall of Mussolini.
After the war he worked as a radioman on an airfield in Mannahec, which is located above the arctic circle in upper Canada. He had enough of the cold and ice and came to California, became a U.S. citizen, and eventually settled in San Diego, Calif. He met the love of his life, Dawn, and they were married on March 28, 1969, in National City, Calif. They moved to Nevada County in 1984.
Donald's last job before retirement was at Singing Hills Golf Course where he was responsible for the repair and maintenance of 200 electric golf carts and 50 gas golf carts.
He was an accomplished artist in all mediums until the tremor of Parkinson's Disease became too distressing. Before that he was never without a piece of paper and pen in his hands. He also loved to tell “sea stories” to any appreciative audience, and until last year he kept his nursing attendants entertained with tales of past adventures.
Donald is survived by his wife Dawn Leaming; brother, Jack Leaming of Escondido, Calif.; nephews Barry Leaming and family of Sacramento, Bill Leaming and family of Seattle, Wash., and Douglas Leaming of Escondido, Calif.; nieces Joan (Leaming) McFarland and family of Escondido, Calif., and Debbie (Leaming) Michel of Escondido, Calif.; and stepchildren Ron Wheeler and family of San Diego, Calif., Glen Wheeler and family of San Diego, Calif., and Carol (Wheeler) Bennett of Lemon Grove, Calif.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Foothills.
Arrangements are under Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
