Are you a ham?
The Nevada County Amateur Radio Club has sponsored special class and test to obtain the amateur radio operators license.
It was held recently at the Salvation Army's Camp Del Oro located just above Nevada City (did you see the story about the camps in Friday's Religion page?).
Reader and ham Richard Miller writes: “Of the 10 people who attended, eight passed the testing for a technician license!
“This is the basic step in amateur radio licensing that has brought renewed popularity to the hobby since the elimination of the Morse code requirement.”
Ham radio operators in our area will host their 11th annual ARRL Field Day on June 26-27 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. NCARC members will participate in this rapid-fire event in which they contact other ham radio stations around the world.
“Anyone with a general curiosity of amateur radio is encouraged to attend and experience this amazing hobby,” Richard says.

Honoring the flag
Lennie Mitchell of the Grass Valley Elks Lodge No. 538 wants to invite everyone to the order's Flay Day ceremony.
It will be at 12 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at the lodge on West Main Street at the corner of School Street.
“We will have presentations from Elks officers, an all-veterans honor guards, a bugler playing taps after a three-volley by the firing party, Blue Star Mothers of America, Boy Scouts retiring flags, and a free spaghetti lunch to follow,” Lennie says.
Plus: “Marie Johnson from Foothill Flowers is donating boutonnieres to the first 25 veterans who show up to the ceremony,” Lennie adds.
Readers' Corner is compiled by The Union staff. To submit items, e-mail them to readers@theunion.com, and put “RC” and your topic in the subject line, or call (530) 477-4230.
